When Can I Come and Choose My Tree?
We will open on November 16 for those who like to get a tree
before Thanksgiving. Thereafter we will be open every day
until the trees we have for sell this season are gone. Our
hours are 9am until 5pm (including Thanksgiving Day). Our
busiest weekends are Thanksgiving weekend and the first
weekend in December, so a good time to come to beat the
crowds and also have a good selection of trees is during the
week, especially the first few weeks that we are open. If
you do come during the week, call or email us and we will be
looking for you.
Every year more and more people visit us and we have been
selling out of trees before the middle of December. A good
idea is to come as early as possible for the best tree
selection.
Our gates are closed and locked at 5pm. We don’t have lights
for evening tree cutting and for safety reasons we don’t cut
trees after dusk.

Can
I Pre-Tag My Tree Prior To The Opening Day?
You are welcomed to come anytime and pre-tag your tree or
trees. The problem that we have had in the past is that on
busy days people, believe it or not, see a tagged tree they
really want and remove the tag. For this reason we don't
encourage people to pre-tag unless they can pick up their
trees before the busy Thanksgiving weekend. We've tried
various tagging methods but none have worked and invariably
someone comes for the tree he or she spent a long time
looking for and it's gone. If you do want to come early,
please e-mail us or call for an appointment.

Can I Cut My Own Tree?
We have Santa’s helpers here that will cut your chosen tree
and carry it to the netter. Another helper will wrap your
tree in plastic netting, so it will be easy to transport.
Someone else will cover the top of your car with a soft
material that protects the finish from sap and from the
needles, and very carefully tie your tree on your car for
the journey home.
However, if you prefer to cut your own tree, we have a few bow
saws available or a better idea would be to bring your own
in case our bows saws are being used. We will still carry, bale and secure
your tree for you. Please don’t bring a chain saw. It’s too
dangerous.

How Many Trees Can I Carry on My
Car?
We’ve loaded as many as 5 trees on a SUV. It depends on the
kind of car that you are driving. You may also carry your
tree or trees in a truck.
We have a few really tall natural trees. We don’t have the equipment
to bale a tree that is 15 feet tall, so for this size tree
you will need a truck or trailer.

Can I Buy Trees & Wreaths at Wholesale Prices for My Group’s
Fund Raiser or My Tree Lot?
We need to save all of our trees this year for our Choose &
Cut customers. We have approximately 30,000 trees, but only
about 2000 are 6 foot tall or more. We will likely have
trees to wholesale next year, so call us then. A seedling about 1
foot tall takes approximately 6 years to reach a height of 6
feet.
We will be able to wholesale our wreaths for fund
raisers. In the past we have helped church groups, school
bands, scouts, and clubs to organize fund raisers. To
qualify for wholesale wreath prices you need to purchase a
minimum of 40, and we need about three weeks notice. Call or
write for prices and for more information.
We encourage our visitors to pick out trees for family and
neighbors by discounting trees and wreaths 10%, if you
purchase five or more. The wreath discount is greater, if
you purchase more than twenty.

cutting and baling the tree, tree and car care (foam to
protect the finish on your car and tying the tree to your
car for you), and the fun experience.

Do You Mail Trees and Wreaths?
We don’t mail trees or wreaths at this time. We do keep a
supply of wreath boxes and are happy to help you package and
mail a wreath. If you have several wreaths that you would
like to mail, let us know, so we will be sure to have enough
wreath boxes on hand.
Are Your Christmas Trees Grown
Organically?
We are an Integrated Pest Management
farm. Our Christmas trees are grown using very few
pesticides. We only use pesticides when all other solutions
fail. Generally speaking, Christmas trees are grown with
very few pesticides – about 1/5 the amount used on apples,
because there are fewer pests. Our trees are grown with a good ground cover around them
which keeps down the need for fertilizers and keeps
fertilizers from creeks.
For every tree that we cut another tree is planted. Real
trees are recyclable as coastline barriers against erosion,
in lakes and ponds for fish nesting and as a mulch for
gardens. They provide oxygen, and the tree fields provide
habitats for small wildlife.

What Else Can You Tell Me About
What Fir! Tree Farm?
A. In our shop we will offer free refreshments and favors
for the children.
B. When we have snow, we have open sled runs for all ages.
We keep some sleds, but it would be a good idea to bring
your own if you have one.
C. Be sure to visit our alpacas. We may be the only
Choose and Cut farm in the USA with alpacas and miniature
donkeys. You may feed and pet the alpacas, but it is best to
just look at the donkeys. Click on Petting Zoo for more
information
D. We are once again promoting the North Carolina Tree
Association Photo Contest. Bring you camera and take
prize-winning photos. Last year 4 of the 5 winning photos
were taken at What Fir!. All the lucky winners get a free
tree. See Contests and Giveaways for more information about
this contest and about our drawing for free trees and
wreaths.
E. We encourage everyone to hike our land, skip rocks in our
ponds and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery.
F. All of our trees are growing in the field – fresh and
beautiful. We don’t have any already cut trees for sale.
G. Finding your special tree is fun and you are welcomed to
spend as much time as you like in the search process.
H. In 2005 we were selected North Carolina Small Farmers of
the Year. To win this award was a great honor and we are
grateful. One of the reasons we were selected was because we
strive to be environmentally conscious.
